In Loving Memory of
James Hanlon
of Grande Prairie, Alberta
December 23, 1939 - October 29, 2022
James Hanlon, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, formerly of Scotland, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, October 29, 2022, at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital at the age of 82 years.
Jim Hanlon was born December 23, 1939, in Linwood, to his mother, Helen Hanlon. He was raised by his loving mother and grandparents. He grew up in Linwood, and later in his youth, James passed his 11-plus exams, which meant he could go to Paisley Grammar High school. After finishing his schooling, Jim moved to Renfrew, Scotland. In 1963, he married Sadie Barr in Paisley, Scotland, where he worked for the roads department as a structural engineer. During that time, he worked across much of Europe and England, building many bridges and roads. Jim spent some time in Oman, Dubai working as well. During that time, Jim courted Cynthia Johnson in Uig Skye and they got married in June 1987. From the summer of 1990 until late 1992 they had a hotel in Scarborough. In October 2009, James came to Canada when he met his Jeannie, and their adventure together began. Back and forth across the ocean he and Jeannie would travel to visit one another until 2010 when he proposed at Sterling Castle in Scotland. Jeannie accepted, and on September 1, 2012, he and Jeannie were married in Grande Prairie. He then chose to become a permanent resident of Canada in 2014. Over the years he and Jeannie enjoyed taking trips back and forth from Canada to the UK and Europe, visiting Scotland, Ireland, and Paris, as well as visiting Vancouver and the Okanagan.
Together Jeannie and Jim enjoyed camping and sitting by the fire on those cool summer and fall nights. Some of Jim’s other hobbies were woodworking, reading, cooking, eating, and sleeping.
Jim will be sadly missed by his soulmate Jeannie; daughters: Lesley, Linda, and Gillian Hanlon; stepdaughter Bev Johnson; stepchildren: Ian (Sarah) Mackinnon, Laura (Ron) Brown, and Heather (Steve) Brady, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is predeceased by his mother Helen Hanlon, Cynthia Johnson Hanlon, grandparents Agnes and Noble Hanlon.
A Celebration of Life for James Hanlon will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2022, from 1:00-4:00 pm at Brodie Manor 3rd floor common room (9640-92 Ave, Grande Prairie, Alberta,).
