In Loving Memory of
Edna "Mernie" Smith
(Maiden: Stewart)
of Hythe, Alberta
August 21, 1937 - January 30, 2024
Edna "Mernie" Smith, resident of Hythe, AB, formerly of Sherwood Park, AB, passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at the Beaverlodge Municipal Hospital at the age of 86 years.
Mernie was born on August 21, 1937, in Fort St. John, BC, to Edna Duncan and Charles Stewart. She grew up in Fort St. John with Edna, stepfather Rene Dhenin, and younger sister Dorothy.
Mernie married Earl Smith on November 25, 1957, and began raising a family of three boys, initially in Fort St. John, Whitehorse, and Dawson Creek, before settling down in Sherwood Park, AB for four decades. As the boys grew up and time presented itself, Mernie began to volunteer at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village. This led to her position in Collections Management for the Alberta provincial historic sites with a Certificate in Heritage Resource Management.
After retirement in 2002, Mernie and Earl moved to Hythe, AB, where Mernie volunteered at the South Peace Centennial Museum for fifteen years.
Mernie will be sadly missed by her husband of 66 years, Earl; three sons: Arin (Nora), Blair (Lou), and Patrick (Claire); granddaughter Bailey; and sister Dorothy Busche.
She was predeceased by her mother Edna Dhenin, father Charles Stewart, stepfather Rene Dhenin, and stepsister Marla.
