Sylvia Ida Spelrem, resident of Grande Prairie, AB passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2022, at the age of 86 years.

Sylvia was born on July 18, 1936, in Bashaw, AB, one of six children to Cecil and Freda Schierman. She graduated from nursing school as a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1955. She married her loving husband, Herb Spelrem, on April 10, 1964. They moved to Edmonton where they had three children Kevin, Mark, and Laura.

In 1968, they moved to Cranbrook, BC and in 1973, settled to raise the family in Quesnel, BC. After a long battle with cancer, her husband Herb passed away in May of 1980. Sylvia worked for 24 years as a nurse in the Quesnel Hospital retiring in 1998. After her retirement, she continued to keep busy doing respite work with the elderly. She later moved to Ponoka, AB, eventually moving to Grande Prairie where her children Mark and Laura had started their own families.

Sylvia enjoyed traveling with her friends, taking in cruises, and world travel. She adored children and always looked forward to spending time with the grandchildren. She loved animals and the company of her pets: Fluffy, Buttons, and Mickee. Sylvia always had an appetite for knowledge and took many different classes during her years: cake decorating, painting, paper tole, flower arranging, bartending, etc.  Everything Sylvia did was very well organized, and detailed and had to be “precise, concise, definite and exact”. She took pride in what she did!

She loved company and appreciated good food and cooking. Sylvia enjoyed watching sports on television, but by far her favorite was curling. She was an avid fan and knew every curler, their background stats, etc. never missing a game. In 2021, she moved to Emerald Gardens Retirement Residence where she enjoyed her time crafting, gardening, and various activities with her many friends.

Sylvia will be missed by so many and will be lovingly remembered by her children: Mark (Emilia) and Laura (Raymond); grandchildren: Terri-Lynn (Tyler), Donald (Suzanne), Katlin (Emma), Renee, Garret (Nicole); great-grandchildren: Bailey, Ella, Emalee, Kelvona, and Beau; sisters: Rhoda (Bob), Ivy; brother: Ron (Elaine); sister-in-law Joan; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
